What is a catio? (cat + patio = catio) A catio is a patio made safe and secure for cats to enjoy, usually with some kind of enclosure. Some other kinds of structures, like a lookout, freestanding enclosures, tunnels, ramps and window boxes may be part of a catio system. Catios come in many shapes and sizes.
Why have a catio? Cats often enjoy some safe outdoor time. They sniff the breeze. They get curious. They get excited about the squirrels in the trees. They birdwatch. Sometimes they just nap! In the hot weather, a catio that provides shade and access to fresh air may be important for safety and comfort, along with plenty of fresh, cool water on hot days.
How much does a catio cost? Costs of catio design and construction can really vary. A DIY solution can cost very little if you can scrounge and upcycle used materials. At the other extreme, a deluxe, large and complex system connecting various zones and providing plenty of play and hide structures can be a quite costly mini-architecture project. On average, prices can start at around $1,200, depending on materials, size, complexity, and other project requirements. We are happy to provide an estimate. Initial consultation is free.
How long does it take to get a catio? Timing can also vary, depending on the scope of the project, availability of materials, and our availability. Most projects are delivered within a couple of weeks to a month.
What else do you make for cats? We have made an activity wall for local cat rescue VOKRA. We also do tunnels, cat-door install, ramps, cat shelves, window screens, lookouts, freestanding enclosures, window boxes, scratching poles, cubby holes, ledges, custom pet gates and more.
Would you make a dog pen? a bunny hutch? a chicken coop? A greenhouse? Sure, try us! Let us know what you're hoping to have, and we'll let you know about feasibility, costs and whether we'd be a good fit.
Is there some way to add to what I already have? Probably! We have experience modifying and adding to existing enclosures and spaces. We'd be glad to have a look and let you know what's possible.
What about situations where there's a strata? We can provide a design drawing to share with your strata council to aid in getting approval for your project. Often it is possible to work with the strata rules and guidelines and still deliver a great catio.
What about a rental situation? We have provided catios for people who rent. Catios can be made more modular and movable if required, and there are methods of installation that do not require drilling into or permanently altering the existing patio.
